With a height of 159 cm and weighing no less than 43.6 kg, this is not a traditional small devotional image, but a distinct architectural art object entirely designed for its visual impact in an interior. Kwan Yin's serene face is deeply carved from a single solid piece of wood. The closed eyes, elongated features, and tranquil expression form a strong contrast with the rough, almost explosive woodworking around the head. Brutalist Woodcarving The maker has attempted not to conceal the natural character of the wood, but rather to make it an integral part of the composition. Knots, cracks, irregular edges, and the wood's original shape remain visible. Around the face, the surface transforms into a powerful pattern of deep gouge and chisel marks. This creates a combination of figurative sculpture and brutalist abstraction: the face is refined and meditative, while the surrounding wood is deliberately kept raw and expressive. The reverse side is also fully worked. Here, the manual tool marks form a large rhythmic pattern across almost the entire surface. Kwan Yin – Symbol of Compassion Kwan Yin, also spelled Guanyin, is one of the best-known figures in East Asian Buddhism. She is associated with compassion, protection, and inner peace. In this modern interpretation, the sculptor has omitted almost all traditional attributes. No elaborate crown, lotus, or jewelry distracts from the depiction. The focus is entirely on the serene face. Designed as a Monumental Interior Artwork The original presentation of the sculpture is distinctive. The heavy wooden artwork stands on a robust solid wooden plinth with heavy metal lockable swivel casters. This construction is practically necessary for a 43.6 kg sculpture, but simultaneously forms a characteristic part of the design. This allows the monumental object, despite its weight, to be moved relatively easily within a space and then securely locked in place. Additionally, on the reverse side, there are two integrated oval handles, which can be used to grasp the object when moving it. A Sculpture for a Large Space Due to its unusual size, this Kwan Yin makes a particularly strong impact in an environment where sufficient distance from the artwork is possible. Consider a loft, hotel lobby, wellness area, yoga studio, restaurant, gallery, or a home with high ceilings. From a distance, the serene face dominates. Up close, the thousands of visible traces of the manual carving and the natural structure of the wood become part of the experience. Dating The combination of the highly stylized depiction, expressive manual surface treatment, and functional industrial presentation fits well within the development of monumental decorative wood sculpture from the second half of the 20th century. We therefore cautiously date the object to approximately 1970–1990. A specific artist or workshop has not been identified at this time. Condition The wood exhibits natural drying and shrinkage cracks, consistent with a solid wood sculpture of this size. These visually form part of the object's organic character. Furthermore, signs of use and age are present, which are clearly shown in the photographs.
