Monumental antique Burmese Buddha statue in Mandalay style, carved from teakwood and richly finished with red and black lacquer. The white-painted face, hands, and feet contrast with the dark robe, the edges of which are adorned with gilded metal fittings featuring colored glass and mirror inlay. The Buddha stands upright on its original circular base, with the right hand pointing downwards in varada mudra and the left hand on the robe. The refined facial features, long earlobes, round ushnisha, and richly decorated robe are characteristic of the 19th-century Mandalay tradition.
Provenance
The statue bears an official export label from 1988 with a seal. This documentation confirms that the object was present in the international art trade by 1988 at the latest. The label and seal have been preserved and form an integral part of the provenance.
Condition
Good antique condition with clear, natural signs of age and wear in the lacquer, paintwork, fittings, and inlay. The black square presentation plinth is later; the original circular base of the statue is preserved. Please see the photos for the full condition.
