This monumental 19th-century Chinese gilt-wood carving panel exemplifies the intricate craftsmanship of traditional East Asian woodwork. The piece features an elaborate court scene, capturing numerous figures gathered around a table within an architectural pavilion, rendered with remarkable depth and narrative vitality. Executed in deep relief and openwork carving, the wooden panel retains remnants of its original polychromy alongside the striking gilding. The deep red background provides a vivid contrast to the gold-coloured surface, highlighting the carefully modelled poses, clothing, and geometric details of the projecting eaves. Measuring 56 centimetres in height and 33 centimetres in width, the reverse is closed with a wooden backing panel, consistent with traditional Chinese interior woodwork. The panel shows age-related character, with partial loss of gilding and polychromy that speaks to its 19th-century origins. The structural integrity remains sound, preserving the layered, almost three-dimensional composition of the carved figures and architectural elements.
