Estimated value: €3,500 – €4,950 An exceptionally large and powerfully rendered Thai statue of Phra Ram (Rama), the hero from the Ramakien, the Thai version of the Ramayana. Rama is depicted as an archer in a dynamic, almost theatrical pose, with one leg raised high and the body in full motion. Measuring H 168 × W 110 cm, this ranks among the monumental examples of its type. The statue is richly detailed with a high chada crown, large ear ornaments, and a fully decorated royal costume. The attire consists of densely applied floral and geometric patterns, beaded borders, and relief details that extend all around the statue. Phra Ram – Hero of the Thai Ramakien Phra Ram is the Thai interpretation of Rama and represents duty, courage, justice, and royal authority. In Thai art, he is recognizably depicted with a crown and a bow. The stylized pose clearly refers to the visual language of classical Thai Khon masked theatre, in which the Ramakien has been performed for centuries. Craftsmanship and Surface The statue is crafted from bronze/copper alloy and has a deep dark patina. Locally, in the deeper-set ornamentation, greenish copper oxidations and reddish-brown metallic tones are visible. The larger skin areas, including the face, arms, and legs, are more smoothly finished and contrast sharply with the exceptionally rich relief of the costume. The long elegant limbs, fine hand modeling, detailed crown, and elaborate decoration clearly place this statue above the much simpler commercial Rama figures. Due to its size and full three-dimensional execution, it is intended as a freestanding sculpture and possesses visual power from virtually every angle. Dating Based on style, surface finish, construction, and patination, we date this statue to the second half of the 20th century, probably circa 1960–1985. The visible copper oxidation is natural but is not used as evidence for an older dating.
