Unique historical armorial glass from Moermond Castle – circa 1613
A special historical object with a story dating back to the early seventeenth century. This oval armorial glass comes from Moermond Castle in Renesse, Zeeland, and dates, according to our previous research findings, to circa 1613.
Central to it is the richly elaborated family crest of Moermond, with the name MOERMOND and the Latin motto:
VIRTUS POST FATA VIRESCIT
This motto freely translated means: After adversity, strength revives.
The warm golden-yellow and deep red hues, the graceful ornaments, and the heraldry give the panel an impressive appearance. It is particularly noteworthy that a small piece of glass has been preserved, which gives the object an extra tangible connection to its historical past.
The armorial glass was restored in 1976. The restoration note at the bottom refers to the workshop and the year 1976.
