Modular Gispen 5600 Storage Unit – A.R. Cordemeyer & L.J. Holleman, 1959
This modular metal storage unit, model 5600, was designed in 1959 by A.R. Cordemeyer and L.J. Holleman for Gispen. The system is a characteristic example of Dutch post-war modernism, in which functionality, flexibility, and industrial design come together.
The current configuration consists of three connected sections, each approximately 73 cm wide. The unit is made of sheet steel, in the characteristic color palette of light gray/cream, medium gray, olive green, and red. The combination of flap cabinets, drawers, open compartments, and shelves offers ample practical storage space. The folded-down flaps can also be used as a writing or work surface. An integrated reading lamp is located behind the right flap.
Thanks to the modular design, the unit can be disassembled and reconfigured according to your own wishes. This makes it suitable as a wall cabinet, bookcase, filing cabinet, or workspace in, for example, a living room, office, or creative studio.
The cabinet is in good, original vintage condition, with visible signs of use and a light patina appropriate for its age.
A collection of original Gispen 5600 system components is included with the furniture, including a back panel, side panel, and various loose shelves. This allows the current configuration to potentially be expanded or rearranged.
