Beautiful vintage three-seater sofa model '671', designed by Kho Liang Ie and produced by Artifort in the 1960s. A special design within the oeuvre of Kho Liang Ie, who is primarily known for his sleek, understated design. The 671, however, shows a more distinctive and playful side of his design work.
This piece comes from Den Helder and was originally upholstered in orange fabric, but has been re-upholstered in a luxurious, soft black wool fabric. The original structure of the upholstery has been preserved, with one long seat cushion, three separate back cushions, and the characteristic finish with buttons and piping. The seat cushion has been made slightly thicker than originally, which provides a more comfortable seating experience without affecting the design of the sofa. The interior has also been completely renewed.
The original cushions were constructed with metal springs, a solid construction that had sagged after decades of use. The cushions have therefore been completely rebuilt with new foam, giving the sofa the correct firmness and support again.
One of the most distinctive aspects of this model is its base. The two wide legs appear almost solid and sculptural, and their curved lines beautifully complement the rounded corners of the sofa. Despite this, the open space under the seat keeps the overall impression remarkably airy. Kho Liang Ie's signature is clearly recognizable in the triangular shape of the legs, a form that frequently appears in his seating furniture. A timeless piece of Dutch design that is interesting to look at from all angles and can effortlessly stand freely in a room. The 671 fits just as well in a modern as in an interior and combines a distinctive design with the comfort of a sofa that can simply be used every day.
