Product description
The iconic Peacock chair, widely known as the Emmanuelle model, produced by Kok Maison, is a piece that goes far beyond its functional role. Its distinctive fan-shaped backrest—resembling a peacock’s tail—has captivated attention for over a century.
The origins of this design trace back to Asia, where it initially served as a ceremonial throne. Over time, it gained recognition through photography and cinema . Its true rise to fame came with the film Emmanuelle, where the chair became an instantly recognizable symbol of sensuality and exoticism. Since then, it has remained a pop culture icon, often referred to by the film’s name .
The piece shown is crafted from natural rattan and bamboo—materials valued for their lightness, durability, and organic appeal. The intricate handwoven structure, visible in both the backrest and the base, highlights the craftsmanship behind its creation. Kok Maison, a family-run company founded in the 1920s, has built its reputation on working with natural fibers and preserving traditional weaving techniques. The armchair is preserved in its original, very good condition with few traces of use.
Stylistically, the chair sits at the intersection of bohemian, colonial, and mid-century modern aesthetics. It is decorative without being excessive—its strength lies in its form and proportions. The tall backrest naturally frames the seated figure, creating a subtle “throne-like” presence that has long been favored in photography and interior design.
This is a statement piece that doesn’t disappear in a room. It works equally well in a living room, bedroom, or commercial space, while its openwork structure keeps it visually light. Rattan interacts beautifully with light, enhancing its texture and bringing warmth to the interior. The seat cushion adds comfort and can easily be customized to suit different styles.
The Emmanuelle chair by Kok Maison is more than just furniture—it is a piece of design history, blending craftsmanship, cinema, and the unmistakable spirit of the 1960s and 1970s. Still relevant, still iconic.
