Mid-Century Modern Stonehill Stateroom Teak Highboard – 1960. A particularly stylish mid-century modern teak highboard by Stonehill Furniture, dating from around 1960. A beautiful example of the combination of British quality and Scandinavian/Danish design influences so characteristic of this period. The furniture is made of beautiful warm teak with a rich, naturally varied wood grain. The absolute eye-catchers are the long, smoothly curved wooden handles, which are carefully shaped and perfectly match the profile of the wood. These sculptural handles give the highboard a very characteristic and refined mid-century look. The base is also beautifully designed. The elegant, tapered legs are connected by the characteristic curved, floating-looking connecting rail. This distinctive detail is strongly associated with Stonehill's highly sought-after “Stateroom” range, a collection in which British furniture-making tradition is beautifully combined with the clean lines and organic forms of Scandinavian and Danish modernism. The proportions are particularly well balanced, making this highboard both a stylish statement piece and a practical piece of furniture.
