A striking and rare Mid-Century Modern brutalist tabletop crucifix that elegantly doubles as a three-point pedestal candle holder. Crafted during the 1960s or 1970s, this anonymous studio piece is a prime example of modernist European liturgical art and expressive metalsmithing.
The corpus (the figure of Christ) is expertly sculpted from a single ribbon of flattened wrought iron or steel, creating an elegant, elongated abstract silhouette. It features an intricately detailed halo/crown fashioned from a coiled bundle of fine brass wire, secured to the wooden cross beam with exposed industrial-style dome rivets.
The vertical post is hand-welded directly to an organic, arched heavy sheet brass base. The three flared feet terminate in sharp triangular extensions, each accented with a stylized purple/pink enameled wax catcher (bobeche) and a central screw spike designed to securely hold small taper or slim candles. The manual torch weld marks and hand-sheared V-notches underneath the base beautifully highlight its authentic, handmade studio-craft origin.
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition with a beautiful, authentic aged patina on both the brass and iron elements. No broken welds, missing rivets, or structural damage. Structurally solid and stable.
