This stunning piece of nautical folk art is likely of Balinese or Southeast Asian origin, showcasing a stylized mermaid with an elegant, upward-curved scaly tail that creates a striking negative space design.
Carved from a single piece of dense, high-quality tropical hardwood (likely Suar or Sono wood), this sculpture has an exceptionally heavy, substantial feel for its size. The exterior features a high-gloss, deep dark brown/near-black lacquer that beautifully catches the light, while revealing rich warm reddish-brown wood grain undertones upon closer inspection. The flat base remains raw and unfinished, showing authentic hand-chiseled score marks and tight growth rings.
