Rare Fredrik A. Kayser Model 807 Sofa for Vatne Møbler – Norwegian Mid-Century Design
A rare and distinctive Norwegian mid-century three-seat sofa, designed by Fredrik A. Kayser for Vatne Møbler. The Model 807 dates from the 1960s and is recognized for its elegant curved form, slender armrests and unusual inset base with chrome pedestal supports and long timber runner feet. The design is also associated with the James Bond film You Only Live Twice.
We have owned the sofa for approximately three and a half years and originally purchased it in the UK from a specialist mid-century furniture dealer. It is a very comfortable, sturdy and solid piece that remains perfectly suitable for everyday use.
As you would expect from a sofa that is more than 50 years old, the original leather shows age, patina, surface marks and general wear across the back cushions, armrests and main body. We personally enjoyed this honest appearance, as we felt it formed part of the sofa's character and authenticity. It is not a pristine example, but neither would we expect a piece of this age to look new.
Someone with knowledge of vintage leather furniture may be able to improve many of the surface marks considerably through appropriate cleaning, conditioning and leather treatment. We have not attempted this ourselves and would prefer to leave it to someone with the relevant experience.
The original leather seat cushions were badly damaged, so approximately 18 months ago we had three replacement cushions custom-made using high-quality rust-coloured upholstery fabric and new foam interiors. The covers are removable for cleaning.
The original leather back cushions remain and retain their original down-and-feather fillings. We also added a thin foam insert to each cushion to help it retain its shape and reduce sagging.
There are a couple of small tears in the original fabric beneath the removable seat cushions, as shown in one of the photographs. These are completely concealed during normal use and would only be visible when the cushions are lifted for cleaning. They do not affect the sofa's comfort, stability or use. (NOTE: The advert only allows me to select "Good" as condition, thought I would probably not describe it as this. Please have a close look at photos and happy to share more photos if needed.)
A web search for this model will show comparable examples—admittedly generally in better or restored condition—being advertised by specialist vintage furniture dealers for approximately €5,000 to €7,000. As our sofa is not in perfect condition and has replacement seat cushions, this has been reflected in our asking price, which we honestly believe is fair for such a rare and distinctive design. We paid significantly more for it when we purchased it, although we freely admit that we bought it more with our hearts than our heads!
We are selling the sofa because it was previously used in our study, but after moving home it has become our main living-room sofa. We now require an L-shaped sofa that is better suited to the room and our current needs.
We are truly sad to let it go, as we have always loved its design, but it deserves a new home where its history, character and craftsmanship can continue to be appreciated.
