Spectacular enameled ceramic lounge ashtray, a testament to the particularly inventive period of the 1950s and 1960s when everyday objects became true decorative elements. Its rectangular shape with generously rounded corners is covered in a superb deep emerald green enamel, traversed by a fine network of craquelures that gives the surface remarkable depth and vibrancy. The eye is immediately drawn to its decoration. A large, stylized bird in high relief, captured mid-movement, with widely spread wings and a curved tail. Its almost fantastical design evokes both the bird of paradise and the phoenix. The relief areas retain the enamel differently, revealing a whole palette of greens, from luminous jade to almost black tones. The piece is completed by an elegant chrome metal mounting, resting on small feet and extended by an upper handle. The combination of shiny chrome and intensely colored ceramic fully belongs to the post-war decorative vocabulary, when French interiors embraced new forms, bold colors, and daring lounge objects. Its deep green enamel and sculpted decoration are characteristic of Vallauris productions, a renowned center of French ceramics in the mid-20th century, where workshops vied with each other in shapes, colored enamels, and relief decorations to create lounge objects that were both popular and ambitious. The magnificent craquelure of the enamel, perfectly visible under light, today fully contributes to the charm of this antique piece. A very beautiful decorative object from the mid-20th century, which could easily be repurposed as a catch-all or simply as a collector's item, as its emerald green and astonishing sculpted bird are enough to give it a true presence.
