Vintage Hand-Carved Wooden Sculpture of David after Michelangelo
A beautifully hand-carved wooden statue of David, inspired by Michelangelo’s Renaissance masterpiece in the Galleria dell’Accademia, Florence. It is a fine example of 1960s Italian artistic craftsmanship.
The figure stands in the classic contrapposto pose. His weight rests on one leg, his head is turned to the side with an alert, focused gaze, and one hand is raised to his shoulder holding the sling. The sling strap is carved running diagonally across his back, and the lowered hand holds the stone, just as in the original.
The carving is detailed and anatomically convincing. You can see it in the defined chest and abdominal muscles, the veins and tendons of the hands, the knees, and the expressive face framed by thick, deeply carved curls. A finely carved fig leaf preserves modesty, a traditional touch that makes the piece suitable for any home or office.
The figure stands on a rustic, hand-cut rocky base with tool marks left visible. The wood has a warm honey-brown finish with a soft satin sheen that brings out the grain and the musculature.
