This is an original mezzotint by the Belgian artist Roel Slabbinck, titled 'The Great Wonder'. The work, created in 1984, displays the characteristic depth and texture typical of this graphic technique.
Roel Slabbinck is a Belgian artist born in Bruges in 1939. He is a Belgian printmaker, draftsman, and designer of ex libris. He trained at the Higher Institute for Printing, Planting Society in Antwerp, and in graphic arts at the Academies in Berchem and Antwerp. He gave up his teaching job and founded the magazines Arte Grafica (1988-1991) and, in 1990, Graphic Art Promotion. His figurative drawings usually convey a message. He works as an etcher, often using the mezzotint technique. He is listed in the Lexicon of West Flemish Visual Artists vii. (Piron)
The print is executed in black and white tones and displays an intriguing, figurative composition. The mezzotint technique, known for its rich, velvety dark areas and subtle transitions to light, has been masterfully applied here. The work is framed in a simple black frame with a mat, placing the focus entirely on the print. The signature and date are visible below the image.
The artwork is in good condition, befitting its age. The frame and mat show slight signs of age, which contributes to the authentic character of this piece from the 1980s.
This mezzotint is a refined addition to a graphic art collection or an atmospheric element in a classic or eclectic interior. The work comes into its own in a study, hallway, or living room, where the subtle details can be admired up close.
