This signed work is one of only three entirely original pieces executed by the artist in the year the motif was created (ED 3) — not a print, not a subsequent hand-finishing, but a standalone original. “Rock Climber” debuted in September 2020 as a monumental, 18-meter-high mural in Aalborg and has become one of Martin Whatson’s most recognizable motifs. This work on paper also dates from 2020, directly from the early stages of the motif’s development — even before the later-released print edition of 250 copies (2021) and three years before the square canvas reprises of the New York solo exhibition “Concrete Echoes” (2023). It shows the motif in its original vertical composition, which is otherwise only found in the non-commercial mural and the one-of-a-kind 1/1 canvas (180 × 130 cm). The later editions, in contrast, were converted into a square composition. With only three existing copies, this work occupies a special position among known publications. It is the earliest commercially available original version of the motif and documents a crucial moment in its development. In direct comparison with the later editions, a distinctly different character emerges: While the well-known prints and canvas versions place the figure more firmly at the center and deliberately tailor the composition to this effect, this early work on paper appears more immediate, dense, and primal. It shows "Rock Climber" in a rawer, less finalized visual language—an early step in the development of the iconic form that later made the motif known worldwide. Sold with COA.
