Van Schijndel completed his training as a furniture designer, architect, and interior architect in 1967 with a graduation from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, specializing in Architectural Design. In 1968, he established his architectural firm in Utrecht.
Initially, Van Schijndel designed primarily for the cultural sector and carried out renovations for private individuals, often within a historical context. He combined his conceptual approach with technical inventiveness. His office specialized in upgrading existing buildings, sometimes combined with new construction. Van Schijndel often also designed furniture and lighting for these projects. Between 1974 and 1993, he taught at the Academies of Architecture in Arnhem and Amsterdam, as well as at the art academies in Utrecht and Rotterdam. As a guest lecturer, he gave lectures at Delft University of Technology and Eindhoven University of Technology. From 1983, Van Schijndel was a senior lecturer and from 1987 a professor for "Fundamentals of Furniture Design" and "Entwerfen" (Design and Construction) at the architecture department of the University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf.
