Product description
We have too much This art week can go Mareike Geys, born in 1945 in Rotterdam, has a great passion for painting and drawing. Because she wanted to become an artist from an early age, she studied from 1963 to 1965 at the Free Academy in The Hague, where she specialized in figure drawing. She also studied at Ateliers '63 in Haarlem, where she received lessons and guidance from experienced artists such as Ger Lataster and Pierre van Soest. Geys lives and works alternately in the Netherlands and France. Geys' oeuvre consists of paintings and drawings, which are provided with watercolor, oil and acrylic paint. Although she painted lyrical abstract for some time during her studies at Ateliers '63, she soon discovered that figuration suits her better. For example, recognizable objects often appeared in her work. Landscapes are central to Geys' creations. She became known for her surrealistic landscapes when she started focusing on seascapes in the 1980s. By chance a face emerged in one of the paintings: the rock is the nose and the fish is the mouth. Since then, the artist has started to paint more surreal seascapes. In addition to landscapes, Geys also made many works with portraits. The landscape is also an important element in these portraits. "I recognize a landscape in some heads," says the artist. Geys has always felt the need to work outside the flat surface of the canvas. For example, she has made several series of paintings that she has embroidered or on which she has pasted shells or a cloud. This makes the works three-dimensional and gives them a spatial appearance. In the period 1968-1973, Geys received the Royal Subsidy for Free Painting no fewer than five times. Her oeuvre is represented in the collections of companies, institutions and private individuals.

1975, so light discolouration in very small spots
