Product description
This sculptural table lamp was handmade in Italy during the 1980s by Tuscan artisan Marco Ricciardi. Carved from natural alabaster, the composition depicts an oversized broken egg, with a flowing base representing the spilled egg white, a vivid orange yolk painted by hand, and two white shell halves with irregular, carefully carved edges. The piece retains its workshop label on the reverse and the artist’s signature.
One shell half rests above the yolk, concealing the lamp holder and functioning as a sculptural shade, while the other sits open alongside it. When illuminated, the natural translucency of the alabaster allows light to pass through the shade, revealing the stone’s intricate veining and creating a warm, diffused glow. The polished base, with its soft cream and honey tones, contrasts with the white shell and glossy orange yolk.
Measuring 64 cm across, the composition transforms an everyday subject into a playful trompe-l’œil sculpture. Its fluid contours suggest the movement of a freshly broken egg spreading across a surface, creating a striking contrast between the apparent fragility of the subject and the solidity of the carved stone. This combination of visual humour, exaggerated scale, and functional sculpture gives the lamp its distinctive Post-Modern character.
