An exceptional and highly sophisticated sideboard designed by Luciano Frigerio for Frigerio di Desio in the early 1980s, representing one of the finest expressions of Italian luxury furniture design and craftsmanship of the period.
Titled “Chiaro di Luna” (“Moonlight”), this monumental sideboard is executed in precious bird’s-eye maple veneer — known in Italy as “occhio di pernice” — a rare and highly prized wood celebrated for its luminous, iridescent grain and extraordinary visual depth. The surface is enriched by a warm brown-stained finish that enhances the natural movement of the veneer, creating constantly changing reflections depending on light and perspective.
The cabinet is further elevated by refined octagonal ebony line motifs and intricate marquetry inlays, details that reveal the exceptional artisanal mastery for which Frigerio di Desio became internationally renowned. The combination of geometric decoration, luxurious materials, and architectural proportions creates a piece that perfectly balances Italian modernism with the decorative sophistication of bespoke cabinetmaking traditions.
Majestic in scale yet elegant in execution, the sideboard features a large open compartment with an internal shelf, entirely veneered in matching bird’s-eye maple, alongside three spacious drawers with veneered fronts combined with acid-etched glass panels. These contrasting materials introduce subtle visual rhythm and reinforce the sculptural quality of the composition.
The elongated silhouette, clean lines, and rich material palette embody the refined aesthetic language that characterized Luciano Frigerio’s most important productions during the late modern and postmodern Italian design era of the 1970s and 1980s.
