Gispen 1431 Armchair by A.R. Cordemeyer
A beautiful vintage armchair from Dutch soil, designed by André R. Cordemeyer for Gispen in 1961. The Gispen 1431 is a characteristic example of post-war Dutch design, combining clear design, practical use, and thoughtful construction.
The armchair features an inviting, fully upholstered seat shell on a slender metal base. The understated lines and the combination of the soft upholstery with the slender frame give the design a timeless character. Originally designed as a conference armchair, this model feels just as at home today in a living room, a reading nook, or a representative workspace.
André R. Cordemeyer (1924–1998) was a Dutch industrial designer who worked for Gispen from 1956 to 1976. He was involved in various furniture designs, always seeking a good balance between form, construction, and efficient production. In 1961, he designed several seating furniture pieces for Gispen, including the armchairs 1431 and 1432 and the sofas 1704 and 1715. The 1431 is thus part of a coherent collection of seating furniture from an important period in Dutch design history.
This piece has recently been completely re-upholstered with a beautiful dark blue wool blend from Oniro. The filling has also been fully replaced, giving the armchair a refreshed appearance and renewed seating comfort. The deep blue hue forms a stylish combination with the metal base and can be easily combined with both warm wood types and modern materials.
An authentic Dutch design furniture piece with an interesting design history, which, thanks to the recent restoration, is ready for years of use again.
