Product description
Vintage Louis Poulsen PH5 Pendant Lamp by Poul Henningsen Beautiful vintage PH5 pendant lamp designed by Poul Henningsen for Louis Poulsen, Denmark. Poul Henningsen (Danish, 1894-1967) was a writer, architect and designer, best known for his signature PH lamps. Henningsen was born in Ordrup, Denmark. He was educated at the Tekniske Skole in Copenhagen and later studied architecture at the Polyteknisk Laeranstalt. After graduation, he was a freelance architect and journalist. He designed several houses and interiors and developed a reputation as a sharp critic of conservative politics. In 1924, he designed the first of his lamps with multiple lampshades. A year later, he won a gold medal at the Paris Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels, where he was nicknamed the "Paris lamp." Working from the theory that the direct glare of an electric light source was detrimental to personal well-being, Henningsen created lampshades from individual elements that were shaped and assembled so that they covered the incandescent bulb, directing the light downward and creating a softer, more diffuse effect. In addition, Henningsen used different colored glass shades with matted surfaces to minimize the amount of hard white light emitted and create a more golden hue. The interior design of the lamp diffuses the light diffusely. This is an older vintage specimen, identified by the hanging mechanism at the top of the lamp. You can also see that the top bowl is made of two parts; in the newer production units, this is made of one piece. Given its age, it is in excellent condition with no significant signs of use; see photos. E27 (large) socket max. 100 watt Diameter 50cm Height 27cm Excellent vintage condition befitting the age of the lamp; especially considering this is one of the earlier ones. See photos for condition details.
