Product description
Some dinnerware sets are recognizable at first sight. The Colmar model from the Longchamp earthenware factory is one of them, with its elegant contrast of chocolate brown and cream and that astonishing beaded decoration that gives it all its personality. This set brings together the lidded sugar bowl and the milk jug from the Colmar service, two pieces whose round and generous shapes deliciously contrast with the geometric rigor of the decoration. A finely detailed brown grid pattern is drawn on the cream earthenware. At each of its intersections, a small, raised white enamel bead is placed. This detail is essential to Colmar's charm. The decoration is not merely painted; it possesses a texture, a rhythm, and a light that are revealed when one turns the pieces in one's hands. The deep, glossy brown then envelops the lower parts, the handle, and certain decorative elements, giving the set that warm and sophisticated allure so characteristic of tableware from this period. The sugar bowl is particularly appealing with its almost spherical shape and its original lid. The grid pattern continues onto the lid in a radiating movement around the brown finial. Beside it, the milk jug adopts the same roundness but elegantly extends into a long, raised, almost theatrical spout. Behind these two small objects lies the history of Longchamp, a Burgundian factory that for decades contributed to the renown of French earthenware. The Colmar model is particularly interesting in this regard. Its grid pattern, its stark contrasts, and its relief work retain the spirit of Art Deco, while its softer volumes already herald the shapes that would become dominant in the middle of the century. These two pieces have weathered the decades together and are in good overall condition. They retain the luster of their enamel and the presence of their decoration, with the discrete marks of use one expects from antique earthenware that has known the life of a home. The sugar bowl measures approximately 9 cm in height with its lid, and the milk jug approximately 7 to 8 cm in height. Longchamp Manufactory, Burgundy, circa .
