Lange Jan is not just any painting, but a historical depiction of the center of Weert. The painting dates from the period between 1906 and 1940. In the bottom left corner is the text “Langstraat, Weert”, indicating the location of the scene.
Anyone visiting the Langstraat in Weert today still sees the Sint-Martinus Church as a recognizable focal point of the city. However, the tower looks considerably different from how it appears in this painting. The reason for this lies in the unique history of the Lange Jan.
The original tower of the St. Martin's Church was approximately 47 meters tall. Commissioned by Dean Johannes Custers (1824–1904), this tower was significantly heightened to become the so-called Lange Jan, reaching a height of over 104 meters.
However, the Lange Jan existed in this form for only a few decades. During a severe storm in November 1940, the spire was destroyed. St. Martin's Church sustained minor damage, while the nearby Hotel De Vesper was completely destroyed.
After the destruction, it was decided to build a new tower on the medieval foundation. Architect Th. Verlaan designed the new tower, reusing parts of the Lange Jan's masonry. The new tower was completed in 1960.
This painting thus preserves an image of Weert that no longer exists today: the Langstraat with the original Lange Jan as the city's landmark. Lange Jan belongs to the premium collection level (approximately 30% of the paintings reach this category).
