Liturgical object “Catavinos”, Silver-plated, circa 1900 - Spain
Original and curious liturgical object, made of silver plate around 1900. It could be a wine taster or a kind of baptismal shell. It has a simple structure, a hemisphere hanging from a curious hook. This clasp is shaped like a horse's leg, carved with great detail, even the horseshoe is visible. On the main part, the hemispherical bowl, the inscription “presbitero” appears, as well as large engraved initials.
A presbyter, in Catholicism, is an ecclesiastic who has been conferred, by the sacrament of order, the second degree of the ecclesiastical hierarchy: priest, cleric, curate, chaplain, archpriest. This liturgical object, which serves for the celebration of the Eucharist, could be a wine taster or catavinos. These are objects with a great tradition, used since the 16th century. Generally, they were made of tin, silver, alpaca, pewter or other metals that do not transmit odors or flavors and, with this, the unalterability of the wine's characteristics is guaranteed. In some cases, they presented allegorical inscriptions to the honesty of the taster or to the virtue and quality of the wines being tasted. In addition, in this case, it has a chain and hook to facilitate its transport.
