Liturgical Object "Catavinos", Silver Plate, circa 1900 - Spain. An original and curious liturgical object, made in silver plate around 1900. It could be a wine taster or a type of baptismal shell. It has a simple structure, a hemisphere hanging from a curious hook. This clasp is shaped like a horse's hoof, carved with great detail; even the horseshoe is visible. On the main part, the hemispherical bowl, appears the inscription "presbitero" (presbyter) as well as large engraved initials. A presbyter, in Catholicism, is an ecclesiastic who has been conferred, through the sacrament of Holy Orders, the second rank of the ecclesiastical hierarchy: priest, cleric, curate, chaplain, archpriest. This liturgical object, used for the celebration of the Eucharist, could be a wine taster or catavinos (wine taster). These are objects steeped in tradition, used since the 16th century. They were generally made of tin, silver, nickel silver, pewter, or other metals that do not transmit odors or flavors, thus ensuring the unalterable characteristics of the wine. In some cases, they featured inscriptions allegorical to the honesty of the taster or the virtue and quality of the wines being tasted. Furthermore, in this case, it comes with a chain and hook for easy transport.
