This rectangular box made of embossed and lithographed tinplate features a very charming country scene on its lid. A country path bordered by a blossoming apple tree, a farmer leading his horse, and a peasant woman walking. The chromolithograph, framed by a reddish-brown fillet, is rendered in bright green and ocher tones, characteristic of the best productions of the Belle Époque. The four sides are decorated with an embossed floral frieze, with peony and foliate scroll motifs on an aged gold background. The edge of the lid bears a gilded inscription mentioning Montpellier, attesting to the southern origin of this confectionery or fine cake box. The hinged lid opens and closes properly. Significant wear and flaking on the sides, very pronounced usage patina, authentic and consistent with its age. Length: approximately 19 cm. Width: approximately 13 cm. France, Montpellier, .
