Nancy, capital of the Duchy of Lorraine, gave the world one of its most famous confections. Lorraine Bergamots, translucent candies with a delicate bergamot fragrance, have been made in the region since the 18th century. This flattened rectangular lithographed tin box is a testament to the interwar period. The bright yellow background speckled with gold bears the inscription "Bergamotes de Lorraine" in large brown cursive and Gothic letters, displaying great graphic elegance. The Cross of Lorraine occupies the left center of the lid, framed by holly scrollwork and stylized bergamots. The frieze on the sides repeats the motif of small Crosses of Lorraine alternating with scrollwork, all around the perimeter of the box. Dimensions: 22 cm long, 9 cm wide. The bottom, made of bare metal, shows very pronounced rust oxidation. The main surface remains remarkably legible and graphically strong despite its age. Chipping and wear consistent with an authentic collector's item, visible in the photos. France, Nancy, 1920s-1940s.
