Lex Grote (Eindhoven, 1958) attended the Graphics course in Eindhoven and the Royal Academy of Art and Design in 's-Hertogenbosch. In his work Grote is guided by his personal expression and inspiration: "I compose. On the canvas professionally comes what it needs at that moment. I am working on several works at once, always putting them away. I look carefully, see when it is 'finished'; then I don't need to add anything more."
On canvases and frames, also his own, representations express what is going on inside Grote: "I open myself up, always find something new. I initiate that process myself: go into the studio, put on some music, get going. Sometimes it suddenly clicks with a work, sometimes I make coincidences. Then something happens, my craft flows." He likes to immerse himself in the process; it's the result that counts: "What does my work say, what does it tell the viewer?"
