Lovely Sosaku Kokeshi. This is yet another creative Kokeshi (Sōsaku Kokeshi), but of a very specific type. The doll is made of a matte wood with a natural, warm brown tint (in contrast to the glossy lacquer finish of many traditional dolls). The head is spherical and the body has a broad, rounded, almost barrel- or bottle-shaped base. A detailed landscape or scene is painted on the belly of the body with fine brushstrokes. You see a traditional Japanese figure wearing a kimono under weeping willows, including Japanese calligraphy or text on the sides. The head has minimalist painted hair in red and black (with red bows on the sides and top) and a very subtle face with a white dot for a nose. This type of artistic doll is handcrafted by artisans as a decorative art object, capturing scenes from Japanese nature, culture, or folklore on the wood.
