Nice Sendai Tanabata Matsuri Kokeshi.
The Sendai Tanabata Festival (仙台七夕まつり, Sendai Tanabata Matsuri) is the largest and most famous Tanabata festival in all of Japan. It takes place every year from August 6 to 8 in the city of Sendai (Miyagi Prefecture).
The Star Festival (Tanabata): This traditional Japanese festival is based on an ancient Chinese legend about two stars separated by the Milky Way: Orihime (the weaver, star Vega) and Hikoboshi (the cattle driver, star Altair). According to the legend, they are allowed to meet only once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh month.
Giant decorations (Sasakazari): While many cities in Japan celebrate Tanabata on July 7 (according to the solar calendar), Sendai adheres to a tradition closer to the old lunar calendar (early August). The city then goes all out with thousands of gigantic, colorful handmade paper decorations and garlands hanging from tall bamboo poles throughout the city and shopping streets.
The seven symbols of good fortune: Central to this are the fukinagashi (the colorful, streamer-like paper garlands that are also painted on this kokeshi), which symbolize the woven threads of Orihime. People also write wishes on small colored strips of paper (tanzaku) and hang them in the bamboo.
The kokeshi bears the text "Sendai," making these colorful festival decorations a beautiful traditional memento of this iconic summer festival!
