Private sellerProduct description
A charming Namahage Kokeshi by Sogen.
Sogen is known for giving his dolls particularly sweet, slightly mischievous, or dreamy facial expressions.
One of his most unique trademarks is incorporating tatami mat textures or woven natural materials into the doll's wood. For instance, many of his dolls wear a mino (traditional straw raincoat) made from genuine tatami material.
Sogen often combines the natural, light color of the wood with deep, contrasting bands of dark brown, black, and vibrant red.
Common themes featured on his dolls include Mansaku no Hana (Japanese witch hazel, which blooms in early spring) or subtle plum blossoms (ume).
Authentic Sogen kokeshi are signed on the bottom with the characters 草玄 (Sogen), either burned in or written by hand.
This doll celebrates one of Japan's most fascinating winter traditions: the Namahage festival (生剥げ), held annually on New Year's Eve on the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture.
The Japanese characters 秋田なまはげ (Akita Namahage) are inscribed on both projecting wooden panels (representing kimono sleeves).
The two iconic Namahage demons (actually guardian spirits) are hand-painted on these panels:
• The red demon (Aka-oni) on the left sleeve.
• The blue demon (Ao-oni) on the right sleeve. During the festival, men dressed in straw cloaks and these fearsome masks go from door to door to admonish lazy or disobedient children and bless the household with a good harvest and health.
The height is 13 cm; please view the photos for the condition.
Please note: These items are not new, so there will always be some degree of scratching, discoloration, and/or small cracks or dents.
