About this seller
Private sellerProduct description
Lovely signed Sosaku kokeshi. A Kokeshi is a traditional Japanese wooden doll. They have been handcrafted for over 150 years in Japan's northern Tōhoku region, which is known for its hot springs (onsen). Originally, they were made by woodturners as toys or souvenirs for spa guests.
They usually have a cylinder-like body and a round head, without arms or legs.
They often feature fine, hand-painted details depicting a face and kimono-like patterns (often with floral motifs).
Traditionally, they are made from natural woods such as fruitwood (like cherry or maple).
Today, kokeshi dolls are valued as art and collector's items. In addition to the traditional styles, there are also modern variants (creative kokeshi or sosaku kokeshi) that are freer in form and color.
The height is 9 cm; please view the photos for the condition.
Please note: The items are not new, so scratches, discolorations, and/or cracks/dents will always be present to a greater or lesser extent.
