Private sellerProduct description
Cute Donguri Kokeshi by Sekiguchi Toa.
Donguri means little acorn in Japanese.
The literal translation of this is "Donguri no seikurabe" (どんぐりの背比べ).
This means that a group of people or things are all evenly matched, but often in a negative sense (for example: they are all equally mediocre, no one really stands out).
This is an authentic Sōsaku (creative) Kokeshi doll, made by the famous Japanese master craftsman Sekiguchi Toa. This specific spherical design is known for its cute little face with large round eyes, a subtly protruding pink tongue, and a wooden bow with red dots on the head.
Sekiguchi Toa (関口 東亜) was born in 1942 in Shibukawa (Gunma Prefecture, Japan). He still lives and works here with his family.
Toa is part of one of the most respected kokeshi dynasties in Japan. He is the son of the legendary Grandmaster Sansaku Sekiguchi (1925–2018), the only kokeshi maker officially declared a "Master of Modern Kokeshi" by the Japanese government. His brother, Toshio Sekiguchi, is also a well-known pop artist.
He began designing and carving his own dolls around 1966. He is known for his ability to combine traditional woodworking with a modern, graphic, and sometimes playful aesthetic.
Throughout his long career, Sekiguchi Toa has won numerous prestigious national awards, including:
• Ministry of International Trade and Industry Award (1978).
• Minister of Education Award (1985).
• Prime Minister's Award (2001), the highest artistic distinction for kokeshi artists in Japan.
