This print depicts a mythological creature, the Sphinx, a legendary figure that also inspired Claude Lalanne and Leonora Carrington, two other major figures of Surrealism. This composition is among the most accomplished and fascinating works created by Leonor Fini.
About Leonor Fini
Leonor Fini was one of the most flamboyant figures of the Surrealist movement. Many consider her the most fiercely independent female artist of the 20th century.
By the age of 17, she possessed a solid knowledge of Renaissance art and Mannerist painting. In 1931, at just 24 years old, she moved to Paris where she met the influential artists Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carrà. She also began a relationship with the Surrealist pioneer Max Ernst, who introduced her to the leading members of the movement.
Her work and flamboyant personality attracted the attention of many major figures of the 20th century, including Salvador Dalí, Jean Cocteau, Albert Camus, and Jean Genet.
She exhibited in numerous Parisian galleries, notably that of Christian Dior, before he became one of the greatest figures in haute couture.
