Striking large ceramic floor vase dating from approximately the late 1960s to 1970s.
The vase is defined by an unusually pure cylindrical silhouette, measuring an impressive 45 cm in height while remaining only approximately 13.5 cm in diameter. Its restrained architectural form is contrasted by a richly textured deep midnight-blue glaze.
The surface varies from finely granular to partially cratered and volcanic, creating subtle changes in texture and reflection across the otherwise monochromatic body. Depending on the light, the glaze shifts between deep navy, blue-black and muted cobalt tones.
The combination of a radically simple form and expressive material treatment places the piece within the experimental European ceramic tradition of the post-war period, with affinities to German and Northern European studio pottery and the broader West German / Fat Lava aesthetic of the late 1960s and 1970s.
The underside reveals the warm reddish-brown ceramic body beneath the blue glaze. No manufacturer’s mark or signature is visible, and the maker therefore remains unidentified.
A particularly sculptural piece that works beautifully as a standalone object in a Mid-Century Modern, Brutalist, Minimalist or contemporary interior.
