His painting, Poppy on a Roof, dates from 1972. Álvaro Guillot (1931–2010) was an artist born in Uruguay.[1] He was a notable exponent of the "New Surrealist School."[2] Guillot's post-surrealist acrylics and oils from the late 20th and early 21st centuries celebrated the landscapes of New Mexico: cats, horses, cattle, the high plateaus of stunted juniper, and prominent green, red, and yellow chilies. His skillful combinations of color and shadow defied all previous Western artistic visions of landscapes, borrowing from no one and embracing something entirely new and intoxicating. One can see vestiges of his early years in South America, but also the best of mid-century Paris and contemporary Cuban art. This painting depicts the sea, with the city visible in the distance. Guillot has remained a discreet presence.
