Impressive large sculpture depicting a roaring lion, carved from beautifully veined alabaster, believed to be Bardiglio-type alabaster from Volterra, Tuscany, Italy.
The sculpture has a striking presence and displays fine craftsmanship throughout, with a deeply carved mane, carefully modelled musculature, open mouth, fully sculpted legs, curved tail and an integral rocky base.
Dimensions: Approximately 45 × 16 × H 39 cm (17.7 × 6.3 × H 15.4 in)
The underside of the base retains clearly visible hand-tool and rough-carving marks, consistent with traditional artisanal stone-working techniques.
Provenance
The artist has not been identified and the exact date of manufacture is undocumented. Based on its characteristics, it is believed to be a 20th-century Volterra production. No attribution to a particular sculptor or workshop is being made without supporting documentation.
The natural grey and white veining of the stone gives the sculpture considerable character, while its large size and dynamic composition make it an impressive decorative and collectible piece.
