Before plastic boxes and standardized storage invaded our homes, needlework had its own small pieces of furniture. Near the armchair or in the bedroom, the workbox held the balls of yarn, needles, patterns, and the ongoing project that would be resumed the next day. This delightful rattan workbox from the 1960s-1970s is a perfect example of this everyday history. With its approximately 61 cm in height, it boasts a particularly slender silhouette. Its large arched handle naturally extends the structure and allowed the workbox to be easily transported from one room to another. The deep and generous basket is entirely encircled by thin rattan reeds arranged horizontally. They form a regular succession of lines around the basket, held in place by vertical supports and traditional bindings. The elevated base completes the transformation of what could have been just a basket into a true small piece of needlework furniture. Inside, its pretty reddish-orange textile lining, dotted with tiny flowers, remains, wonderfully evocative of 60s and 70s decor. The green, blue, and white of the small flowers punctuate the warm background and create a particularly pleasing contrast with the honey color of the rattan. The rattan has a beautiful patina acquired over the decades. The workbox shows the normal traces of its history: wear and marks on the rattan, some fragile spots on certain strands and bindings, and a small snag on the textile lining. These details are visible in the photographs. It will naturally regain its primary function with a sewing, crochet, or knitting enthusiast. Its beautiful silhouette also allows it to be repurposed: a basket for antique linens, storage for throws, magazines, or yarn, or even simply a decorative piece in a bohemian, shabby chic, or vintage interior.
