All the imagery of Dutch landscapes can be found in this large faience dish: windmills by the water's edge, a sail passing in the distance, a few houses, and small figures sketched in deep blue on the ivory faience. The central decoration, almost pen-drawn, is surrounded by a beautiful frieze of scrollwork and stylized motifs. But it is also the shape of the dish that catches the eye: a generously undulating border, worked in relief with an interlaced pattern that gives the entire piece a lot of presence. The C&S Rotterdam mark appears on the reverse. Measuring approximately 34 x 24 cm, it is a beautiful presentation dish, large enough to stand alone on a piece of furniture, in an antique display cabinet, or among a collection of blue and white faience. Time has left some traces on the piece, notably a network of fine crazing in the glaze and a chip with loss on the rim. The latter is clearly photographed so that the condition of the dish can be accurately assessed. A charming Dutch faience piece, whose decoration and sculpted border retain a very beautiful presence despite this old damage.
