Some ceramics are simply placed on a table, while others instantly imbue a room with character. This large Monaco ceramic dish, crafted in the 1950s, perfectly embodies that particularly creative period when Côte d'Azur workshops introduced a free, sun-drenched, and extraordinarily expressive decor into homes. Upon a deep black, almost lacquered enamel, a veritable garden unfurls: large pink, mauve, and orange flowers, sea-green foliage, yellow buds, and long winding stems create a teeming design that seems to dance across the entire surface. Gold then comes to articulate the light. It emphasizes the leaves, traces the contours of the flowers, and courses along the dish's scalloped rim. Depending on the light, these delicate golden accents appear and then recede into the black of the enamel, lending remarkable depth to the design. The form itself is superb: a wide, slightly hollow basin, approximately 31 cm in diameter, punctuated by an animated, almost undulating rim. With its approximately 7 cm height, the piece possesses a true sculptural presence. On the reverse, the incised number 131 and a handwritten mark attest to its creation. In the post-war years, Monaco and the Côte d'Azur became a prime territory for the renewal of French ceramics: bold colors, brilliant enamels, painted motifs, gilded accents, and free forms convey this new Mediterranean elegance, bolder and more joyful. The dish can, of course, be used as a large decorative platter, but above all, it deserves to be showcased: on a console table, as a centerpiece on a large dining table, in a bookcase, or even mounted vertically as a piece of wall art. The contrast between black and its vibrant colors allows it to complement both traditional and highly contemporary interiors. A few signs of age and slight wear to the gilding, consistent with its history and age, in no way detract from its remarkable decorative presence.
