Product description
Large Chinese sideboard in solid pine, with two doors and two shelves inside decorated in subtle low relief, originally from Gansu and dated toward 1930. A balanced provincial piece, sitting between a horizontal living-room sideboard and a main storage cabinet, representative of large-scale Gansu furniture with restrained elegance. In traditional homes of Gansu at the turn of the twentieth century, generous-scale sideboards presided over main rooms, where tableware, textiles and everyday objects were stored and displayed on the continuous top board as platforms for vessels, lamps or honoured pieces. The ample proportion — nearly 1.75 metres wide — provides important presence without excessive verticality. The discreet decorative carving reflects the region’s refined taste, seeking elevation without saturated ornament. Pine was the predilect timber. It is built in solid pine with frame-and-panel fronts, two doors and two inner shelves. All fronts are carved in low relief with discreet decorative motifs — rhythmic lines, small floral or geometric elements — that order the composition without excess. The pulls are original forged-iron rings on plates, and the legs, of square section, extend slightly forming characteristic lateral shoulders. The patina preserves the noble tone of aged pine: a warm settled honey-brown colour, with entirely legible grain and soft matte sheen. The carvings maintain all their definition and the hardware retains stable oxidation. The structure is sound and all mechanisms work correctly without resistance. For its ample scale and sensitively decorated front, it sits naturally in wabi-sabi, japandi, Mediterranean, eclectic or Asian-inspired interiors, where it works as a living-room sideboard, a low piece beneath a hung screen, a principal storage piece in a loft, or an anchor piece in a dining room. The discreet carving and noble patina sustain the composition on their own.
