The Longchamp factory, founded in Haute-Marne at the end of the 19th century, established itself as one of the great French earthenware manufacturers of its time. Its productions, renowned for the quality of their ivory enamel and the refinement of their printed decorations, graced the tables of both the bourgeoisie and the general populace throughout France for several decades. This large platter is a fine example of it. Its decor, named Lutèce, unfolds on the rim in three symmetrical compositions: neo-classical cartouches framed by garlands of finely hatched flowers and foliage, printed in a deep green that elegantly contrasts with the slightly creamy ivory background. The style of the decor, with its references to antiquity and stylized vegetal ornaments, is characteristic of Longchamp's production from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, around . The mark on the reverse, stamped Utèce / Longchamp, unambiguously confirms its origin. With its 29 cm diameter, it is a generous and well-proportioned large serving platter. It bears an old crack on the rim, clearly visible in the photographs, which attests to its age without altering the legibility or beauty of the decor.
