Product description
Lakshmi (Sri Devi) – South India, 17th century
This refined bronze goddess statue depicts Lakshmi, also known as Sri Devi, the Hindu goddess of prosperity, fortune, and abundance. She stands upright in a gentle contrapposto and holds a lotus as a recognizable attribute. The slender modeling, high coiffure, jewelry, and the understated yet stately posture align with the classical South Indian bronze tradition. The statue was traditionally cast and features a deeply developed natural patina with green and brown oxidation zones.
Iconography
The lotus connects Lakshmi with purity, fertility, and prosperity. As Sri Devi, she appears within the Vaishnava tradition as the divine consort of Vishnu and as the personification of prosperity and auspicious energy.
Condition and Surface
The surface shows age-related wear and natural oxidation. The plinth and underside show signs of use consistent with long-term preservation and possible ritual use. No modern glossy finishes have been applied that would conceal the ancient patina.
