This 1980s Korean octagonal box is part of the Najeon Chilgi tradition, an ancient decorative art combining lacquer with mother-of-pearl inlays. On its lid, two peacocks are depicted amidst a floral design punctuated by butterflies. The birds' plumage, flowers, and foliage are composed of mother-of-pearl fragments whose reflections shift from pink to green and blue depending on the light. Against the mahogany brown background of the box, this play of iridescence gives the design its full presence. Najeon Chilgi craftsmanship has belonged to Korean decorative arts for centuries. Handed down and adapted through generations, it also saw significant production of decorative objects throughout the 20th century, intended for both the domestic market and travelers discovering Korea. This history takes on an additional dimension here, as the reverse side still bears the inscription "Novotel Ambassador Seoul." The box thus preserves the trace of its passage through one of Seoul's international establishments and testifies to those travel souvenirs that, a few decades later, tell as much about an era as a destination. It shows signs of use and surface scratches, particularly on the reverse and interior, while its mother-of-pearl decoration has retained its beautiful iridescent effects.
