Tulip table, by Eero Saarinen for Knoll International, circa 1955/1960.
Tulip base in white lacquered aluminum, marked on the reverse "knoll international" and numbered 172-173.
Round top in veined white marble with a raised edge. The top is not the original but a 19th-century piece.
In very good condition, with the following minor imperfections: scratches on the base, a few dents on the edge of the marble, and a stain in the center of the top.
A superb piece, a must-have for vintage design enthusiasts. The TULIP series was designed in 1955 by the Finnish-American designer Eero Saarinen for Knoll: a table and chair in the shape of a flower, supported by a central pedestal—the first of its kind. A decidedly simple and futuristic design that celebrates Eero's work against the "miserable clutter of legs" in furniture.
