This special armchair was produced by KNICOS, the furniture factory of Firma Knigge & Co. from Stadskanaal. The company was founded in 1919 and grew into an important Dutch furniture manufacturer, primarily known for solid and artisan-crafted seating furniture. From 1931, the chairs and armchairs were marketed under the name KNICOS. After the war, tastes changed rapidly. Traditional, robust Dutch furniture increasingly gave way to the lighter and more modern designs from Scandinavia. This particular armchair shows that KNICOS did not completely ignore this development. With its slender Wenge frame, elegantly shaped armrests that extend into the legs, high, slightly reclining back, and flowing lines, the design has a clear Scandinavian aesthetic. Other Dutch manufacturers made a much more explicit choice during this period. For example, WéBé developed an extensive collection in the modern Danish style from 1955 under chief designer Louis van Teeffelen. Pastoe also deliberately built an innovative, modern collection under Cees Braakman. KNICOS, however, seems to have experimented with this new design language for only a relatively short period. This is precisely why such models are relatively rare today. Ultimately, this innovation proved insufficient to give the company a new future. The rise of Danish imports, the decline in demand for traditional furniture, and business setbacks, including a failed American army project, brought KNICOS into increasing difficulties. After an acquisition in 1968, bankruptcy finally followed in 1982. Our example has been fully restored. The Wenge woodwork has been completely repaired and refinished. The padding and upholstery have also been renewed, while retaining the original shape and characteristic proportions. A first-class furniture fabric, type GROENLAND from the company Switch, in a beautiful green/black melange, was chosen. A special example of a piece of furniture made by a Dutch manufacturer who did foresee the Scandinavian zeitgeist but ultimately failed to make this transition on the same scale as some of his contemporaries. The armchair is immediately usable and has been brought into virtually better-than-new condition. We have 2 examples in Wenge with green upholstery in stock. The yellow example can be found elsewhere and is made of Teak.
