JOPIE HUISMAN ( ) was born as the youngest of a family with seven children. From his youth, Huisman drew what he saw around him and what moved him. He obtained his diploma as a house painter and in 1939 he became a pottery painter at a pottery in Workum. In 1963 he exhibited his first paintings at Galerie De Blauwe Hand in Harlingen. After his divorce from his wife Eelkje in 1973, he devoted himself to his painting. About the painting 'Trousers of a Cow Milker' from the period around his divorce, Jopie Huisman says: In 1973 I suddenly ran into major private problems. I was completely thrown back on myself. Then I found an old pair of trousers among the clutter. A worn-out, eighty-times mended, dirty milker's trousers. I saw myself in it: a great desolation. I took it with me and painted it. Also because other people recognized what I had painted, it was my salvation. Actually, it is a self-portrait.
