Kees Verkade (1941 – 2020)
Verkade was born in Haarlem as the son of power of attorney holder Willem Verkade (1895-1971) and his second wife, Adriana Barendregt (1915-1978), 20 years his junior, daughter of a farm labourer; He was named after his mother's grandfather (1832-1888) and brother (1907-1970), Korstiaan Barendregt.
After drawing and painting lessons with Gerrit van 't Net, he studied at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague from 1958 to 1963. Although he wanted to become a commercial artist, he eventually gravitated more towards sculpture. Thanks to his first exhibition at the Haarlemse Vishal, he sold two works to the Frans Hals Museum. Since then, he had his studio in Zandvoort.
From his first marriage, which ended in divorce, he had two sons; after settling in France and Monaco, he remarried in 1979, from which marriage a daughter was born a year later. In 1966, he received his first commission from the Municipality of Haarlem for the statue *Winkelen* (or *Stadten*). Later, he also achieved international recognition, particularly in France and Monaco, where he lived and worked since the late 1970s and maintained good contacts with the court.
Verkade passed away in Monaco on December 29, 2020. Shortly before his death, he put the finishing touches on a sculpture for the victims of the coronavirus pandemic and as a tribute to healthcare workers.
Some well-known sculptures.
• In front of the Princely Palace of Monaco stands Il Malizia, a statue of a monk with a sword beneath his robe. Verkade received this commission in 1997 because Monaco had been ruled by the House of Grimaldi for 700 years. Il Malizia, or "the cunning one," was the nickname of Francesco Grimaldi, the founder of the principality.
• In Amsterdam, the Bust of Simon Carmiggelt stands in the Eerste Weteringplantsoen in memory of the writer Simon Carmiggelt.
• One of his most famous sculptures, *Fietsles* (Cycling Lesson), is located in Groningen.
• A resistance monument was unveiled in Zandvoort in 2003. • In the garden of Soestdijk Palace, a statue of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard was unveiled by Queen Beatrix on May 20, 2009. It marks the 100th anniversary of Juliana's birth and commemorates the fact that she lived there from 1937 to 2004.
• In April 2010, a war memorial by Verkade was unveiled in Hardenberg.
