Product description
This chandelier was manufactured by Kalmar in Austria during the 1970s, part of the maker's well-known Ice Glass series of Mid-Century Modern lighting. The fixture is built from numerous individually cast glass panels, each with a heavily textured, frosted surface that resembles blocks of ice, arranged in overlapping vertical columns around a two-tier metal frame with a chrome finish. The rippled surface of each panel catches and scatters light unevenly, producing a faceted, sculptural glow rather than one uniform beam. A central rod suspends the two tiers of glass from a cylindrical chrome ceiling canopy, giving the piece a drum-like, cylindrical form built up from dozens of vertical glass rods rather than a single shade. The scale and structure suit a dining table, an entry hall, or a stairwell where a substantial hanging fixture can serve as a focal point. Kalmar's Ice Glass designs, produced in collaboration with Austrian and German glassworks through the 1960s and 1970s, are closely tied to that era's interest in organic, hand-worked textures paired with otherwise geometric lighting forms, and pieces from this series remain sought after among collectors of Central European Mid-Century lighting.
