The Netherlands / 1910 / Bottle Stand / Urania 1075 / pewter / Jugendstil / Art Nouveau / Art Deco
A charming bottle stand by Urania Maastricht, The Netherlands. The design of this beautiful piece is lends itself to the Jugendstil artistic design movement or Art Nouveau. The holder is marked on the bottom: Urania 1075.
In 1902 Frederik Regout, a grandson of the industrial magnate Petrus Regout, started the 'first Dutch Factory of Art and Luxury Articles in Metal' in Maastricht, which was converted into NV Urania a year later. The factory produced beautifully designed cast pewter jugs, bowls and decorative objects in the then current Jugendstil style. At that time Urania was the only art pewter foundry in the Netherlands. The technical knowledge and aesthetic inspiration came from Germany, where numerous firms were active in the production of Jugendstil pewter. Urania did not have a long life. The popularity of Jugendstil declined and in 1910 Urania ceased to exist. It is estimated that the Maastricht factory made four hundred different models.
